For a while, Mark Wood appeared to be one of those fast bowlers who made more promises than they could keep.
An apparently never-ending string of injuries, especially to his ankle, threatened to either put an end to his career or make him become another fast-medium seamer who gave up the pace for a longer playing career. He made a blistering comeback from injury in the second half of 2016, delivering some of the most potent fast-bowling spells of the season as he helped Durham’s to the final of the NatWest T20 Blast and also featured in England’s 4-1 victory over Pakistan in their one-day international series. But further ankle issues ruled him out of a tour to Bangladesh and he missed India, too, after it was discovered that he bowled at the tail end of the English domestic season when his ankle was fractured. It all meant that he faced a third ankle operation within a year and, however optimistic the prognosis, cast doubts upon the resilience of a player who had won a reputation as England’s fastest bowler.
Wood, though, would not be defeated. A lengthier approach to the crease would relieve some of the burden on his body and let him reach the speeds his early career had promised, so Wood abandoned the short run-up that had been a defining aspect of his game up until the latter half of 2018.
The outcomes were striking. In early 2019, Wood made his comeback to the England team for the last Test of the Caribbean tour. He took his first five-wicket haul and produced velocities of almost 95 mph in a surprisingly aggressive fast bowling display. It was the fastest spell an England bowler has ever produced, according to veteran Telegraph correspondent Scyld Berry, who is thought to have seen more England Test matches than anybody else. There would be more. Just before the World Cup, he was called back up to the ODI squad, and he went on to play a significant part in the team’s ultimate success.
Career Turning Point
In August 2012, he took 5 wickets for 78 runs against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Mark Wood Bowling Style
Wood was never the prototype fast bowler for modern England. He is skinny, barely 6 feet tall, and at least initially bowled from a sprinter’s run-up, but at the beginning of the 2015 summer, after Durham and the Lions noticed his speed, he was given his Test debut. He made a strong first impression by bowling at over 90 mph against New Zealand, maintaining his spot for Australia’s visit, and capping things off by grabbing the wicket that ensured England’s Ashes triumph at Trent Bridge.
