CBSE Class 12 Syllabus of English Core 2024-25
The syllabus of CBSE Class 12 English core is divided into three sections as follows-
I. Reading Comprehension through Unseen Passage (12+10 = 22 Marks)
II. Creative Writing Skills (4+4+5+5 = 18 Marks)
III. Literature (40 Marks)
TOTAL – 80 Marks

Section A- Reading
I. One Factual/ Descriptive/ Literary Passage would be asked to assess the student’s comprehension, interpretation, analysis and inference. Vocabulary assessment will also be assessed via inference.
II. One unseen case-based factual passage with verbal/visual inputs like statistical data,
charts etc. to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference and evaluation.
Note- Multiple Choice Questions / Objective Type Questions and Short Answer type Questions
(to be answered in 40-50 words) will be asked from this section.
Section B – Creative Writing Skills
1. Notice (4 marks)
The break up of marks is as follows-
Format : 1 Mark
Content : 2 Marks
Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar : 1 Mark
The word limit of a notice is 50 words

2. Formal/Informal Invitation and Reply writing (4 Marks)

Format : 1 Mark
Content : 2 Marks
Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar : 1 Mark
The word limit is 50 words
The task of invitation and reply writing is a short writing task and students can attempt the question in less than 7 minutes. Thus, this is a highly scoring question in the English paper.

3. Letters based on verbal/visual input, to be answered in 120-150 words.(5 Marks)
Letter types include
- Application for a job with bio data or resume
- Letters to the editor (giving suggestions or opinion on issues of public interest)

Organisation of Ideas: 1 Marks
Content : 2 Marks
Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar : 1 Mark

Job Appplication and Bio data have to be attempted in accordance with the details given in the question. This writing task involves a lot of concentration because students have to be careful and not miss out on any important detail that should be mentioned in the answer. However, it is very easy to score full marks and a good score will definitely improve your result.
Letter to the editor is a highly scoring question. The student must follow the format of the letter to editor to score well. You must solve a few questions of letter to editor to gain confidence. Letter to the editor can be written to highlight a problem, to raise concern over a social issue, to share your views over any matter of concern.
4. Article/ Report Writing, descriptive and analytical in nature, based on verbal inputs. (5 Marks)
The break-up of 5 marks is as follows-
Format : 1 Mark
Organisation of Ideas: 1 Mark
Content : 2 Marks
Accuracy of Spelling and Grammar : 1 Marks
The task has to be attempted in 120-150 words

The difference between article writing and report writing is that article covers any social issue, phenomena, or it can be about a person. A report gives the facts of an event in a chronological sequence. Both Article writing and report writing are long writing tasks and students have to follow the simple format so that they can score full marks in English.
Section C – Literature
This section will have a variety of assessment items including Multiple Choice Questions, Objective Type Questions, Short Answer Type Questions and Long Answer Type Questions to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and extrapolation beyond the text. The important questions of all literature lessons have to be covered. Students can revise the lessons by reading the class 12 English lesson summary. The questions based on comparison between two characters from different stories are very important long answer questions and students must know the details of character sketches of all characters in class 12 English lessons. In order to ace the poetry section, you should be well – prepared with all poems from Flamingo reader and prepare MCQs, extract based questions, Important poetic devices of all poems of class 12, short answer and long answer questions.
1.One Poetry extract out of two, from the book Flamingo, to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference and appreciation. (6×1=6 Marks)
2.. One Prose extract out of two, from the book Vistas, to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, evaluation and appreciation. (4×1=4 Marks)
3. One prose extract out of two from the book Flamingo, to assess comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference and evaluation. (6×1=6 Marks)
4. Short answer type questions (from Prose and Poetry from the book Flamingo), to be answered in 40-50 words each. Questions should elicit inferential responses through critical thinking. Five questions out of the six given, are to be answered.
(5×2=10 Marks)
5. Short answer type questions, from Prose (Vistas), to be answered in 40- 50 words each. Questions should elicit inferential responses through critical thinking. Any two out of three questions to be done. (2×2=4 Marks)
6. One Long answer type question, from Prose/Poetry (Flamingo), to be answered in 120-150 words. Questions can be based on incident / theme / passage / extract / event as reference points to assess extrapolation beyond and across the text. The question will elicit analytical and evaluative response from the student. Any one out of two questions to be done. (1×5=5 Marks)
7. One Long answer type question, based on the chapters from the book Vistas, to be answered in 120-150 words, to assess global comprehension and extrapolation beyond the text. Questions to provide analytical and evaluative responses using incidents, events, themes, as reference points. Any one out of two questions to be done. (1×5=5 Marks)
