75% attendance mandatory to sit in CBSE Board Exams 2025

CBSE mandates 75% attendance for Class 10, 12 students to sit in Board Exams 2025

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued an official notice to Principals and Heads of Schools, emphasizing the need to strictly follow Rules 13 and 14 of the CBSE Examination Bye-Laws concerning student attendance for Class X and XII board exams.

As per CBSE guidelines, students are required to have at least 75% attendance to be eligible for the board examinations. However, the Board allows a 25% relaxation in cases of genuine emergencies, such as medical conditions, participation in national or international sports events, or other serious situations, provided that appropriate documentation is submitted.

Schools have been instructed to inform both students and parents about this attendance requirement and the consequences of failing to meet it. CBSE also warned that during inspections, if students are found to be absent without proper leave records, it will be assumed they are not attending school regularly, and they may be disqualified from taking the board exams.

The notice also highlights that schools are not only an academic institution but also serve as a key contributor to the holistic development of students. Beyond academic instruction, schools offer opportunities for extracurricular activities, peer learning, character development, and the cultivation of values like teamwork, collaboration, respect for diversity, and inclusion. As a result, consistent attendance is crucial for supporting students’ overall growth and development.

The Board further clarified that once schools submit attendance shortage cases to the CBSE, no changes to the records will be permitted. Attendance will be calculated up to January 1 of the academic session. CBSE also issued Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for addressing attendance shortages, along with a proforma for submitting requests for such cases.
