Pursuing multiple degrees at the same time may be allowed by UGC
UGC may allow to pursue multiple degrees simultaneously – The University Grants Commission (UGC) has recently initiated a panel to revisit the old idea of allowing the students studying in its affiliated universities to study multiple degrees simultaneously. Seven years back in 2012, the body had came up with a similar panel to look into such a matter which had offered multiple consultations as well. However, the idea was jinxed later on.
If this idea comes into force then the students would be given permission to pursue multiple degrees in the same time from the same universities or the different universities. Currently the panel is studying the feasibility of this matter.
UGC Vice Chairman Bhushan Patwardhan is currently heading this panel which is examining if a student can be allowed to pursue two degree programmes whether its UG or PG simultaneously affiliated under the same University or the different University through Distance Mode, Part-time Mode or Online Mode.
According to UGC Official, the panel had been set up last month and has already conducted few meetings. Currently they are holding consultations with the different stakeholders and are exploring this idea’s feasibility.
In 2012, the panel headed by then Hyderabad University Vice Chancellor Furqan Qamar had given this recommendation that a student enrolled in a Degree programme via the regular mode could be allowed to pursue at max one additional degree programme during the same time duration through the Distance or Open Mode or even from a different University.
The 2012 panel report had further stated that however, they can’t allow two degree programmes under to be pursued simultaneously under the regular mode. There are high chances that it could create academic, logistic or administrative problems at several stages. At max they could allow one advanced diploma, certificate, degree, PG programme simultaneously under the same university or from a different one.
