All regulatory bodies AICTE, UGC, NCTE of HEI to merged to form Higher Education commission of India (HECI) under NEP Implementation process
AICTE Chairman Anil Sahasrabudhe while speaking at the one-day national conference on “Salient features of approval process of handbook (20212022) for resetting technical education and implementing NEP said that University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) would be merged this year to pave way to form for a single regulator of higher education, The Higher Education Commission of India (HECI) under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 implementation process.
He said, “All regulatory bodies including the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), University Grants Commission (UGC) and National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE) will be merged to form the HECI. This will come into effect this year.”
He also said that NEP had several features benefiting students, faculty and institutions. With one regulator, the focus would be on quality of education
At present, the three regulatory bodies manage the functioning of various higher educational institutes. UGC is responsible for functioning of Universities, while AICTE approval is mandatory for all technical institutions. Similarly, NCTE is responsible for all forms of teaching courses and curriculum in the country.
As per the NEP 2020, several functions including accreditation, funding and academic standard setting would be carried out by independent verticals. All forms of education, barring legal and medical education would come under the ambit of HECI.
