They are also called ‘describing words’

विशेषण
जो शब्द कर्ता या कर्म की विशेषता बताते हैं, उन्हें विशेषण कहते हैं।

 

ADJECTIVES EXAMPLES

colours – Red, black, white, yellow, orange
रंग – लाल, काला, सफ़ेद, पीला, नारंगी

Shapes – Round, thin, tall, slant, thick/ fat.
आकार – गोल, पतला, ऊँचा, तिरछा, मोटा

State – Good, beautiful, dirty, new, lovely.
अवस्था – अच्छा, सुन्दर, मैला, नया, प्यारा

Let us see an important rule while translating –
एक महत्त्वपूर्ण नियम

We can frame a sentence in the following two ways –
एक वाक्य को दो तरह से बोल या लिख सकते हैं –

वह एक अच्छा छात्र है। He is a good student.
वह छात्र अच्छा है। That student is good.

 

Adjective can be used with the subject / object and it can be used on it’s own also.
विशेषण कर्ता या कर्म के पहले लग सकता है या अकेला ही प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।

ADJECTIVES EXAMPLES SENTENCES

राम ने लाल कमीज़ पहनी है। Ram is wearing a red shirt.
यह आम मीठा है। This mango is sweet.
उसने काली छतरी पकड़ी है। He is holding a black umbrella.
वह बड़ी गाड़ी लाया है। He has brought a big car.
यह पेड़ छायादार, घना और मज़बूत है। This tree is shady, dense and strong.
हमारी अध्यापिका स्नेहमयी और कठोर दोनों है। Our teacher is both – loving and strict.

 

DEGREES OF COMPARISON

There are three degrees of comparison as follows –

  1. Positive degree
  2. Comparative degree
  3. Superlative degree

Let us discuss them one by one –

POSITIVE DEGREE

The positive degree of an adjective is used when we have to denote the quality of one person, place or thing.
जब किसी एक व्यक्ति या वस्तु का गुण या विशेषता बतानी हो।

 

POSITIVE DEGREE EXAMPLES SENTENCE

राधा बुद्धिमान और समझदार है। Radha is intelligent and wise.
भारत एक समृद्ध देश है। India is a prosperous country.

 

COMPARITIVE DEGREE

The Comparative degree of adjectives is used to compare two persons, places or things.
जब किसी दो व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं में तुलना करनी हो ।

 

 

COMPARATIVE DEGREE EXAMPLES SENTENCE

हरी रवि से उम्र में बड़ा है। Hari is older than Ravi.
कश्मीर की वादी हिमाचल से ज़्यादा सुन्दर है। The Kashmir valley is more beautiful than Himachal.

 

Note – We use ‘than’ with the adjectives of comparative degree.

 

SUPERLATIVE DEGREE

When we want to denote the quality or a person, place or thing among a group of more than two, we use the superlative degree of comparison.
जब बहुत लोगों, स्थानों या वस्तुओं में से किसी एक की विशेषता बतानी हो।

 

SUPERLATIVE DEGREE EXAMPLES SENTENCES

माउंट एवेरस्ट विश्व की सबसे ऊँची छोटी है।

Mount Everest is the highest peak in the world.

सुनंदा अपनी कक्षा में सबसे अधिक बुद्धिमान छात्रा है।

Sunanda is the most intelligent student in her class.

 

Note – We use ‘the’ with the adjectives of superlative degree.

Some adjectives form the comparative degree by adding ‘more’ before them and the superlative degree by adding ‘most’ before them. Let us see some of them –
