Fire and Ice Class 10 English 2 Marks Questions (20 to 30 words)

1. "Fire and Ice" was first published in 1920. Briefly explain how the WW I might have influenced the theme of the poem.
Ans. - World war I was the first global war. There was destruction over all the continents. Perhaps this was the reason behind the poem “Fire and Ice” where the poet elaborates on the causes that could have led to the end of the world. He says that either greed or hatred can destroy the world. Both these factors were present in the warring factions in the first world war.

 

2. Create a tagline / slogan / catchphrase for the poem.
Ans. - Greed and hatred – the two most powerful weapons of destruction.

Fire and Ice Class 10 English 3 Marks Questions (40 to 50 words)

1. The tone of the speaker contrasts with the seriousness of the subject matter. Justify.

Ans. - The subject matter of the poem is the end of the world which is a serious issue. No one would want this to happen. However, the poet uses words like “I hold with those who
favor fire” which show that he wants the world to end. His words “To say that for destruction ice Is also great” are sarcastic in nature. He says that ice is great for destruction, however, he does not want this to happen.

 

2. Fire and Ice projects a pessimistic outlook. Comment.

Ans. - The poem talks about the end of the world. This theme is a negative one as it talks of destruction. The poet says that both fire which represents greed and ice which stands for hatred, can destroy the world. Thus, it makes the reader sad because no one wants the world to get destroyed.

3. Evaluate the line- Some say the world will end in fire/Some say in ice- in the context of volcanic eruptions, forest fires, meteor collisions, melting ice caps, etc.

Ans. - This line from the poem is justified by the examples given. The forces of nature can also cause a similar impact on the world. Calamities due to heat like volcanoes, forest fires and meteor collisions can burn everything. On the other hand, melting of ice caps can also increase the sea level and cause submergence which will ultimately lead to end of the world.

Today, when I am the President of South Africa, I can’t help recalling Robert Frost’s ‘Fire and Ice’.
My countrymen faced oppression and adversities caused by both desire and hatred. We have been the victims of such cruelty. The people of South Africa spent fifty years in the struggle against discrimination based on the colour of skin. Today, when we have gained freedom, it is like our world has gained life. Till now we were dead because our freedom had been snatched away from us. I agree with Robert Frost’s view that both Fire and Ice can destroy the world. However, I feel that ice is stronger than fire, hatred can cause much more destruction as compared to greed.

 

2. Most of your classmates, like Frost, feel that man’s greed and rage or hate, would lead the world to its destruction.
You feel that the ‘fire and ice’ in Mankind can be addressed to create a harmonious world.

Ans - I don’t support the pessimistic view presented in the poem. Fire and ice represent desires and indifference. Both these elements are necessary for the growth and development of humanity. Desires and wants are the driving force behind so many inventions which eventually improve our lifestyles. Man works to fulfil his desires and so, desire is an essential part of human life. Also, indifference leads to competitive spirit which drives us to excel in our field of work. This brings out the best in all of us.

As we know that excess of everything is bad, so is the case with both these elements also. However, we need everything in moderation to live a well balanced life. Thus, we can conclude that fire and ice are beneficial elements of human survival unless they are explored beyond a certain level.
