What is the Preposition of Motion?
Preposition of Motion is used to show movement from one place or from one direction to another.
संबंध सूचक अव्यय (गति) – जो विभक्ति संज्ञा या सर्वनाम की गति की सूचना दे।

TYPES OF PREPOSITION OF MOTION EXPLANATION WITH EXAMPLES
Let us discuss the important prepositions of motion one by one
Into, along, across, towards, to, by, through, around, up, down, off, onto, over, past.
1. ‘Into’
‘into’ Indicates the movement from the outside to the inside of something.
Like – ‘into the pond’, ‘into the fire’.
Let us see an example sentence –
उसने नदी में छलांग लगा दी।
He jumped into the river.
2. ‘along’
‘along’ Indicates movement from one end to the other end.
Like – ‘along the river bank’, ‘along the road’.
Let us see an example sentence –
हम नदी के किनारे चल रहे थे।
We were walking along the river.
3. ‘across’
‘across’ indicates movement from one side to the other of something.
Like- ‘across the road’, ‘across the sea.
Let us see an example sentence –
मार्किट सड़क के उस पार है।
The market is across the road.
4. ‘towards’
‘towards’ is used to mean ‘in the direction of’.
Like- ‘towards the north’, ‘towards Delhi’
Let us see an example sentence –
हिमालय पर्वत उत्तर की तरफ हैं।
The Himalaya mountains are towards the north.
5. ‘to’
‘to’ isused to indicate the destination.
Like – ‘to America’, ‘to the shop’, ‘to your house’, ‘to school’

बच्चे स्कूल जा रहे हैं।
Children are going to school.

6. ‘by’
‘by’ expresses the means of an action.
Like – ‘by train’, ‘by coaching’, ‘by sea’
Let us see an example sentence –
हम स्कूल बस से जाते हैं।
We go to school by bus.
7. ‘through’
‘through’ denotes motion within an object from one end to the other.
Like – ‘through the tunnel’, ‘through the room’
Let us see an example sentence –
रेलगाड़ी पाँछ सुरंगों में से निकलती है।
The train passes through five tunnels.
8. ‘around’
‘around’ indicates to go in a circular direction due to an obstacle.
Like – ‘around the world’, ‘around the park’.
Let us see an example sentence –
हम विष्व के चारों ओर घूम के आए।
We went around the World.
9. ‘up’
‘up’ Iindicates the movement of ascent.
Like – ‘up the tree’, ‘up the ladder’
Let us see an example sentence –
बन्दर पेड़ के ऊपर चढ़ गया।
The monkey climbed up the tree.
10. ‘down’
‘down’ indicates the motion of descent.
Like – ‘down the stairs’, ‘down the road’

वह सीढ़ियों से नीचे गया है।
He has gone down the stairs.
11. ‘off’
‘off’ indicates the motion away from a surface.
Like – ‘off the wall’, ‘off the ceiling’.

बिल्ली ने दीवार के ऊपर से छलांग मारी।
The cat jumped off the wall.
12. ‘onto’
‘onto’ indicates motion of ascent and the present place of anyone.
Like – ‘onto the table’, ‘onto the roof’

चोर छत के ऊपर चढ़ गए।
The thieves climbed onto the roof.
13. ‘over’
‘over’ indicates the motion to pass above something.
Like – ‘over the pool’, ‘over the fence’
Let us see an example sentence –
हम बाढ़ के ऊपर से कूद गए।
We jumped over the fence.
14. ‘past’
‘past’ indicates motion to a place further than a particular point.
Like – ‘past the post office’, ‘past her house’
