Character Sketch of Custard (Dragon)
The dragon is meek and coward and always longed for a safe cage. Belinda and her pets mocked him. He has sharp and big nails, spikes on his back, a very strong tail but he is frightened of things. All other animals used to call him Percival because they consider him to be a coward. But, the dragon surprised everyone with his heroic act of killing a pirate, who had come to Belinda’s house. The bravery of Belinda and the other pets fails and they run away, screaming for help but the dragon, whom everyone thought to be a coward, rescued them from the pirate by gulping him. Once saved, all pets and Belinda embraced Custard and thanked him for saving them.
The Tale of Custard the Dragon Overview – The idea of battling anxieties and conquering fear through courage and determination is the theme of Ogden Nash’s poem “The Tale of Custard the Dragon.” In the poem, a dragon by the name of Custard overcame his fear of not having a safe place to sleep to defend the inhabitants from a pirate. The poem emphasises the idea that even the most courageous creatures can experience fears and that these anxieties and difficulties can be conquered by bravery and tenacity.
