Character Sketch of Custard (Dragon)

The dragon is meek and coward and always longed for a safe cage. Belinda and her pets mocked him. He has sharp and big nails, spikes on his back, a very strong tail but he is frightened of things. All other animals used to call him Percival because they consider him to be a coward. But, the dragon surprised everyone with his heroic act of killing a pirate, who had come to Belinda’s house. The bravery of Belinda and the other pets fails and they run away,  screaming for help but the dragon, whom everyone thought to be a coward, rescued them from the pirate by gulping him. Once saved, all pets and Belinda embraced Custard and thanked him for saving them.

The Tale of Custard the Dragon Overview – The idea of battling anxieties and conquering fear through courage and determination is the theme of Ogden Nash’s poem “The Tale of Custard the Dragon.” In the poem, a dragon by the name of Custard overcame his fear of not having a safe place to sleep to defend the inhabitants from a pirate. The poem emphasises the idea that even the most courageous creatures can experience fears and that these anxieties and difficulties can be conquered by bravery and tenacity.

Belinda was a little girl who had four pets. Her pets include a black kitten called ink, a little grey mouse, a little yellow dog and a little dragon. But she wasn’t capable of saving herself when the pirate attacked their home. She was terrified and turned pale out of fear and cried for help.

Ink was a little black kitten, Blink was the name of little mouse and Mustard was a little yellow dog. All of them were the pets of Belinda who lived in a little white house. Ink and Blink could chase even lions down the stairs. Mustard was as brave as a tiger in a rage. However, when the little house was attacked by a pirate who carried pistols, Belinda cried for help and became pale with fear. Mustard ran away with a terrified cry and Ink trickled to the bottom of the house while Blink disappeared in his mouse hole. Thus, in time of adversity, they all proved to be the cowards.

Character Sketch of Pirate

The Pirate has been described as a wicked, sinister person who had come to harm the pets. Perhaps he wanted to loot Belinda’s little white house. He carried a pistol in each of his hands and a small sword between his teeth. He supported a black beard and his one leg was wooden. He tried to enter the house by climbing in through one of the windows. The dragon, Custard attacked the pirate and gulped him.
