The college was established in 1909. It is a deemed research University that provides degrees in disciplines such as Science, Engineering and Humanities. In 2017, it was granted the tag of ‘Institute of Eminence.’ It has always been ranked as one of the best institutes in the country. It has six academic divisions under which several departments are instituted.

The institute came into existence in 2016. It is an Institute of National Importance and has collaborated with several Petroleum and Oil major companies of India such as ONGC, IOCL, etc. It is one of the few institutes of the country that offers degrees in Oil and Petroleum sector.
