Raman Research Institute PhD Admission 2024 – Raman Research Institute, Bangalore invites applications from motivated & qualified students for admission to PhD Program in various research areas for the academic session 2024-24. The Raman Research Institute is an autonomous research institute engaged in research in basic sciences. The institute was founded in 1948 by the Indian physicist and Nobel Laureate Sir C V Raman. It was restructured in 1972 to become an aided autonomous institute receiving funds from the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India.
About PhD Program
- The PhD program conducted by RRI aims to empower its students with advanced technical abilities in basic science and in a specialization, so as to prepare them for a career in research. The programme commences with formal credited course work in advanced topics during the first year. RRI offers select PhD students, who qualify in the course work and a subsequent comprehensive examination, opportunities for supervised research within the four broad areas of research conducted at the institute – Astronomy and Astrophysics, Light and Matter Physics, Soft Condensed Matter Physics and Theoretical Physics.

Eligibility Criteria for Raman Research Institute PhD Admission 2024
- Candidates seeking admission in PhD programme must necessarily have the following Qualification(s):
- One year/2-semester Master’s degree in Physics/ Mathematics/Astronomy/Optics/ Photonics/ Biophysics after a 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree programme with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade or;
- Two year/4-semester Master’s degree in Physics/ Mathematics/Astronomy/Optics/ Photonics/Biophysics after a 3-year Bachelor’s degree programme or equivalent qualifications with at least 55% marks in aggregate or equivalent grade or;
- 4-year/8-semester Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering with 75% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade or;
- M.Phil degree in Physics/Mathematics with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade.
- A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade is allowed to reserved candidates.
- Students who expect to complete their final degree in the academic year 2023-2024 may also apply, provided they can produce their final scorecard at the time of admission.
- Reservations for SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates will be as per Institute norms.

Selection Procedure
- Candidates seeking admission are called for interview based on:
- Performance in the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST-PHYSICS) with a valid score. Please visit https://www.jest.org.in for more information on JEST (or);
- Performance in any of the following tests with a valid score:
- CSIR-UGC NET (Physics)
- GATE (Physics)
- GRE (Physics)
Final Selection
- The final selection of all the candidates is based on performance in the interviews to be held at RRI tentatively during May – June 2024. Call letters for interviews will be sent around the second or third week of April 2024.
