CBSE set to implement major changes in Exam Pattern of Class 10 Board Exam 2026

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a significant change in the examination system for Class X students, set to be implemented from 2026. In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the new scheme introduces two Board examinations annually, allowing students an additional opportunity to improve their scores.

Key Changes in the Examination System

  • Two-Exam Format: Students will have the option to appear in two board exams during a single academic year—the main examination and an improvement examination.
  • Flexible Scheduling: The first phase of exams will take place from February 17 to March 6, while the second phase will be conducted from May 5 to May 20.
  • Syllabus and Assessment: Examinations will cover the full syllabus and will be designed to assess core competencies rather than rote learning.
  • Grouping of Subjects: Major subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Social Science, Hindi, and English will be conducted on fixed dates. Regional and foreign languages, along with elective subjects, will be tested separately.
  • Evaluation and Results: The higher score from the two attempts will be recorded in the final mark sheet. Results for the first exam will be declared by April 20, and for the second by June 30.
  • Practical/Internal Assessments: These will be conducted only once per academic year.
  • Implementation of DigiLocker: Students’ scores from the first exam will be uploaded on DigiLocker, making it easier for them to apply for Class 11 admissions.

This new system is designed to reduce exam pressure and lessen the need for coaching classes. It focuses on conceptual learning rather than rote memorization, helping students feel more confident.

With an estimated 26.6 lakh students expected to appear in Class X board exams in 2026, CBSE is working on logistical arrangements to ensure smooth implementation. The board is also considering similar reforms for Class 12 in the future.

Education stakeholders, including students, parents, and teachers, are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposed changes before finalization. The CBSE is expected to review the policy post-implementation and make necessary amendments to further streamline the examination process.
