What is an Informal letter?

Personal letters are also called informal letters which can be written to family members, parents, siblings, children, relatives, friends and acquaintances.

They can be written for various reasons like to invite a friend for vacations, to inform the parents about the result, to know the health of ones grandparents, to bless a newly-wed cousin, etc.

We need to know the format of the informal letter to secure all the marks allotted for the question.

Format of Informal Letter

An informal letter usually has six parts

1 The address

The sender’s/writer’s address is written at the top left-hand corner of the page.

  1. The date

The date is written in full below the address (12 October 20–) but the name of the month should never be written in short [January as Jan.(x).]

  1. 3. The salutation

The salutation is written on the left-hand side of the page below the date. It varies for different persons and depends on closeness with the person addressed.

For friends we write: Dear Sneha, My dear Sona

For members of the family we write: Dear Father, My dear Mother

(Note: While writing informal letters we do not write the name, designation and address of the person addressed, nor do we write the subject.)

  1. The body

This is written in paragraphs. The first paragraph is an introduction which states the reason for writing the letter. The second paragraph gives all the related information and the third paragraph is the conclusion.

  1. The subscription

This is written after the body of the letter and is a courteous leave-taking before the letter ends. It is written according to the relation with the person addressed or the purpose behind writing the letter. (Yours is written without an apostrophe.) The details are given below:

(a) To relatives we write – Your affectionate son/brother/sister or Yours affectionately

(b) To friends we write – Your sincerely, Yours lovingly or Yours affectionately

  1. The signature

The writer’s name or signature is written (with designation in formal or official letters) below the subscription. The address of the person to whom the letter is addressed is written on the envelope. This should be given in full, must be clear and correct (The PIN CODE should preferably be mentioned). These days we do not use punctuation marks when we write the address, date, the salutation or the subscription. All these begin right next to the margin.

  1. Roshani Colony,

New Delhi

20th March, 2023

My dear Namit

I have just received your progress report from your school. I am shocked to see that you have miserably failed in English and Maths. Your attendance is below 70%.

It seems that you are neglecting your studies. You have definitely fallen in bad company. If this state of affairs continues, you will fail in your final examination. So, you should mend your ways before it is too late. It is high time that you should avoid bad company and pay attention towards your studies. Always remember that hard work is the key to success. I hope you will act upon my advice and start working from today.

With best wishes.

Yours lovingly

Ankur Sharma

Example 8

Your younger brother is a book-worm. He has gone to stay in a hostel. Write a letter to him advising him to take part in games and other school activities.

  1. Sharma Niwas

Ambala, Haryana

17th August 2023

Dear Deepak

I have come to know from a friend of yours that you have grown weak and are keeping poor health. You work hard at studies and have become a book-worm. You do not take part in games. I may tell you that a student must take care of his health also. His mental and physical development should go hand-in-hand.

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. A sound mind lives in a sound body. Games can teach us even more than books do. They can make us active and strong. So make it a point not to neglect games. Play regularly so that you may do well in studies also.

I hope you will act upon my advice and start taking part in games.

Respected Grandpa,

I am extremely happy to send my heartiest wishes on your eightieth birthday today. My joys knew no bounds when I remembered this great day. Lucky are the people who will enjoy your company along with grandma. Her happiness would be all the more pleasurable for all. Such auspicious days remind us about the greatness of a man, his worthy principles, qualities and sermons. We are lucky to have such a great and noble soul among us who goes on enlightening us at the time of difficulty.

I again congratulate you on this grand day. I wish to be in your lap but my examinations have kept me in the bondage. With deepest regards to respected grandma.

Yours affectionately

Baroda, Gujarat

3 March 2023

My dear Uncle

I celebrated my birthday on the Ist of March and missed you much. However, your gift parcel reached well in time. Thank you very much for sending me such a nice gift.

I have really enjoyed reading the book. The Art of Living, sent by you. It has taught me that the business of living is, in fact, the celebration of being alive. What a wonderful idea! I especially liked the chapter ‘How to influence people and win friends’. By following its precepts one can easily change one’s bitterest foe into a friend.

Thanking you once again for your valuable gift. Pay my respects to dear aunt and love to little Rinki.

Yours affectionately.

Nalini
